Is ISO 26000 – from the International Organisation for Standardisation – meeting its goal of pressuring governments, business and NGOs to operate according to a set of global social standards? That’s a challenging question considering the final document was simultaneously ambiguous, ambitious and toothless. The standard’s goal is in fact modest.

This standard is applicable to all organizations, whose aim is to contribute to the health and wellbeing of society, regardless of their size or industry. ISO 26000 was developed before the UN Agenda 2030 and the SDGs, yet offers more than 450 recommen - dations related to its main principles and core sub - jects of social responsibility that help organizations contribute to the SDG goals. ISO 26000 offers practical guidance to any organiza - tion, anywhere in the world, wishing to contribute to ISO 26000 was prepared by ISO/TMB Working Group on Social Responsibility. This International Standard was developed using a multi-stakeholder approach involving experts from more than 90 countries and 40 international or broadly-based regional organizations involved in different aspects of ISO 26000 represents a guidance on corporate social responsibility and it is, at the present time, one of the most important document on CSR in the world.
