The final link in all food chains is made up of decomposers, those heterotrophs that break down dead organisms and organic wastes. A food chain in which the primary consumer feeds on living plants is called a grazing pathway. The term “microbial loop” was originally coined by Azam et al. (1983), a paper on which both John and I were co-authors.
The paper summarised and connected a variety of discoveries made during the preceding decade by several marine biologists. The microbial loop describes a trophic pathway in the marine microbial food web where dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is returned to higher trophic levels via its incorporation into bacterial biomass, and then coupled with the classic food chain formed by phytoplankton-zooplankton-nekton. Microbial loop This important part of marine food chains involves DOM leaked from diatoms and other phytoplankters that is consumed by bacteria. The bacteria are then consumed by flagellates and ciliates. That trophic pathway is called loop because it expresses the return of dissolved organic matter to higher trophic levels via its incorporation into bacterial biomass. The microbial loop is of particular importance in increasing the efficiency of the marine food web via the utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which is typically unavailable to most marine organisms.
Often a small amount of material from the microbial loop is utilized by higher trophic levels (<20%) 2.

Resource availability influences marine microbial community structure, suggesting that population-specific resource partitioning defines discrete niches. Identifying how resources are partitioned

Conclutions (microbial loop) • The microbial loop is a model of pathways of carbon and nutrient cycling through microbial components of pelagic aquatic communities.
By consuming the molecules, bacteria are reintroducing critical energy back into the food web when slightly larger creatures, like krill, eat the bacteria. This process is known as the microbial loop. Tags: Bacteria Viruses Predation Feeding
The microbial loop is a general interaction in which DOM is utilized as an energy source. As stated before, microbes hold a significant influence in this interaction because they allow for an energy pathway that may have otherwise been lost. The microbial loop comprises bacteria, flagellates, ciliates, and other microzooplankton (less than 200 μm in diameter) in the water column. Its significance has been investigated in a sandy-beach/surf-zone context solely in the Eastern Cape (McLachlan and Romer, 1990; McGwynne, 1991).

When nutrients enter the microbial loop, they tend to remain in the photic zone longer, due to the location, and slow sinking rates of microbes. The realization that natural assemblages of planktonic bacteria may acquire a significant fraction of their nitrogen and phosphorus via the uptake of dissolved inorganic nutrients has modified our traditional view of these microorganisms as nutrient remineralizers in plankton communities.
The grazing step is mediated primarily by heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNFs) which are the key bacteriovores in aquatic environments [3].
